Our Approach to a Main Water Line Issue

We start with an assessment. Our technicians will inspect the service at the meter and all visible connections to see if the line is compromised or galvanized. In a lot of homes in this part of town, the primary shutoff is at the street meter, so that dictates how we isolate a leak and the scope of the replacement.

We triage yard and street leaks. When we get a call about a yard leak or something in the street, we confirm whether it is a water service failure. This allows us to direct our team to the work they can handle and let the customer know if a utility needs to be involved.

We coordinate when a water main is part of the problem. Say there is an issue on East 30th near Willamette or another corridor. We will be in touch with EWEB or city crews who may be on site isolating the pipe while we put together a plan for the property’s service line.

For a permanent repair, we provide full replacement. Trenchless pipe boring is one option; it puts in a new pipe with very little disturbance to the driveway or yard and keeps traffic moving. Standard trenching is also available.

We handle the project from excavation or boring through permitting. We can go over your options for pipe material and what will hold up best in local soil conditions.
The Case Against a Simple Patch Job
With galvanized services, an inspection will typically reveal internal corrosion. You might find and put a patch on one leak, but the rest of the pipe is still deteriorating, and another failure is only a matter of time.
In some neighborhoods, you will see the same thing happening on the main along East 30th Avenue or elsewhere; the repeated breaks are usually due to the soil or the way the original installation was done.
When corrosion is an issue, Precision Plumbing will usually put in a full service line replacement instead of opting for some temporary underground fix. It is the better long-term solution for the household and means one is less likely to be called back for repeated repairs.
What We Can and Can’t Do

We are able to diagnose what is visible when a galvanized service has failed and replace the main water lines, whether by trenching or trenchless boring. We also take care of the permitting and plumb the new line into the home.

If you report a leak, we can use that to put priority on service line work. Should we see a problem that is part of a wider pattern of main breaks, we will make the recommendation to put in a call to the utility.

There is room to work with the utility crews. If EWEB is out in the street isolating a leak or looking at pipeline corrosion, we will coordinate with them so that once they have the section contained and traffic is under control, our replacement work can get underway.

On the other hand, there are specialized tasks we don’t do. A large-scale repair of a street main is something the utility handles; Precision does not put in city-owned mains. What we will do is advise on which part of the private line needs to be fixed and how to isolate any leaking service.

Our equipment set does not include some of the more advanced acoustic or gas-based leak detection methods. But in most cases with a galvanized service, a visual inspection at the house and meter is all the information needed to make a case for replacement.
